So you want to create your own online course?

I can understand your interest; as online income in 2021 is definitely on everyone’s mind, especially as we attempt to navigate through the pandemic and the financial burdens it’s created.

A professionally created online video course can and will create you a passive income, how much you earn is then down to how much effort you put into marketing (paid & unpaid) as well as how often you share your course* I will explain further.

In this article I will share the process I use to create courses alongside an easy alternative to have your course created in less time and effort……..keep reading.

The course creation process:
Research the topic
Write the Script
Create the presentation
Screen record
Voiceover
Edit
Create PDF handout
Complete and Upload

So lets start with the researching of the topic: topic research is mostly a case of taking the time to find articles and educational papers that are open source, utilising the information and adding your personality to the script (as this is essentially what you’re creating) write down all that’s relevant to your potential students (making sure its not too much; we don’t want to overwhelm them, but we also don’t want to rob them of a full experience.
This process should take no longer than 48 hours; dependant on how you split your time up.

All documentation used can be sited in the description used in the presentation or via the Udemy course description page when the course is uploaded* more about that later.

2. Write the script:
Take the information you’ve found and write the information as your own using the text as your inspiration. This is the important you don’t want to forget….make you sure you number and title each section, this may seem like common sense to many of you but, but I’ve made this mistake and my common sense level is pretty high; so anything is possible. The last thing you want is to be set up at your pc, presentation ready, screen recorder on and mic set up – you go to record and get lost in the text; having to start all over 30 mins into record time. Approx. time to complete: 1-2 hours

3. Create The Presentation:
Now that your script is complete, its time to create your presentation. A presentation is simple a series images and a small amount of text relevant to the topic e.g. a quote or a paragraph verbatim to the audio. Approx. time to complete 6 – 10 hours.
A professional presentation can be created with my link for free via CANVA

4. Screen record:
In order to create a video version of your presentation, you will need to screen record and add audio. There are two options for this to be done affordably.
1. Use CANVA free on me, to record the presentation with your floating head; which is just a fancy way to say your ‘live’ image will be shown in a small circle in the bottom left of the screen. Each video you record will connect to your webcam capturing you in real time. >>Canva Free On Me<<

2. Invest in screen recording software: there are many low cost ones that will allow you to only record the screen and will capture your audio as you read out your script.

5. Voiceover:
Which simply means to read out your text in time with your presentation. Each series of imagery and audio will create each lecture. Approx. time to completion 1-3 hours including

6. Edit:
You may want to edit your presentation, if you have canva it may be as simple as removing parts of the presentation, perhaps you noticed a duplicate slide or some text was mispelled or you’d like to use a different image or add an element from canva that make the presentation pop.
Otherwise editing can be as complicated as you removing parts of the audio or video to adding music in parts, to adding text or images to pop in specific parts of the recording. For this you can find many online editing software packages that are affordable and very easy to use.

Canva also has the pro feature of recording your course with your ‘live’ video; here you can record your audio over the images in ‘real time’ – an excellent feature for anyone who doesn’t have screen recorder & editing software ( I have both because create courses for clients, they haven’t requested my image yet but anythings possible)

7. PDF Handout:
Create a pdf handout to give out to students as an additional resource, you can use the free canva software to create it in seconds.

8. Complete and Upload:
Your course is now complete. All you now have to do is upload to Udemy and promote your course in anyway you can

Udemy is how you’ll start to see results. Not only in income but in vital feedback in your courses content and your teaching style. These reviews are vital to help you improve on the course by creating additional content. Any improvements can also be seen in future courses and likely to create a steady stream of income as your courses become more popular.

Don’t forget to utilise your social media, promote yourself as a course creator and offer your courses on a dedicated website all linking back to udemy.
