Are You A Productive Blogger? Tips For The Single Mother On A Blogging Mission

Are You a productive blogger? If not you should be, sooner rather than later…..

Are you a productive blogger?

Are You a Productive Blogger?

Anyone can start a blog. It takes less than half an hour to set yourself up with a domain, hosting and a WordPress blog – and even faster than that if you go for a free hosted blogging tool. However, many people fail to make a success out of their blog – and it’s not that they don’t enjoy what they blog about or find it boring – it’s because they just don’t have the motivation to maintain their productivity.

If you’ve ever considered creating an income from home, a blog is a great choice and will allow you to share your knowledge and interests with the world, whilst making a part-time or full time income from the comfort of your living room or home office. I have written a step by step blog creation article with screenshots to help you…..check it out here

Just to let you know this post may contain recommendations in the form of affiliate links, if used by you and you decide to invest in one of the many resources I use to grow this blog, they will give me a small commission at absolutely no extra cost to you. This is how I support this blog and post like this one.

Ps. I only recommend products I’ve personally used and love.

1. Firstly, let's understand Why You Need to Be a Productive Blogger

Productivity is everything when blogging. There’s no point having a wealth of knowledge to share and a story to tell if you can’t find the time to get it down in a post. And, not just that – you’ve not only got to get it down in a post, you’ve got to get it down in a way that people can read it, learn from it, enjoy it and share it.

Many of the world’s best blogs, both in terms of profit and number of visitors, didn’t get to where they are by only blogging sporadically without keeping inspired to produce quality content on a regular basis and there’s no reason why this would be any different for your blog either.

A blog isn’t going to write itself and it certainly isn’t going to promote itself. With thousands of blogs being started every week, and many of them laying dormant a month later, what’s to stop your blog from being any different? What’s different is that you’re about to learn the best ways that you can instantly become a more productive blogger. And by that, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to sit at the computer for many hours per day writing continuously; being productive is all about making the most of your time and putting the right amount of effort into a project. Productivity isn’t always just about the amount of content that you write; it’s also about how much you can leverage the potential of that content.

2. Get Organized – Computer and Desktop

After understanding the reasons why you need to become a productive blogger, the second thing that you should begin working on if you’re looking to become more productive is getting organized. There’s nothing worse than trying to motivate yourself to complete your chosen tasks, deal with the technical aspects of your blog and, at the same time, try to be creative and come up with great content when your work-space and computer are in a mess.

Where you work and the way that you work can be important when trying to stay inspired and productive when working on your blog. If you’ve got a messy desk with papers, bills and food all over the place, you’re not doing yourself any favors. The saying about a clear desk equals a clear mind is true and, in order for you to feel comfortable, relaxed and prepared, it’s important that you clear yourself some space and give yourself room to breathe when working.

The Productive Blogger

If you’re finding it difficult to sit down and get on with that blog post you’ve been meaning to complete (or even start), it’s going to be much more efficient to ensure that your work-space is prepared for you to actually sit and work.

Many times, when working from home, it can be so easy to lose an air of professionalism (and, in some ways that can be one of the perks) but it also shouldn’t be the case that this causes you to not treat the work that you’re doing as something meaningful. By simply setting the right intentions before you start a project and ensuring that you have cleared up your working space, you’ve starting your project free of clutter and distractions that may cause you to not take the work you’re about to do seriously.

Essentially, it makes no difference whether you work in your own office or at a desk or on the kitchen side with a laptop – the premise is still the same. Your work-space is the place where the magic is going to happen. It’s the place where your blogging empire is going to be launched and developed and, if you truly want to reach great heights with your online business through blogging, it’s important that you take your work-space seriously enough because that work-space – however small or mediocre – your office, is your place of work, and it should be treated as such. By learning to become a Productivity Ninja you will create the success you want in a fraction of the time it takes other unfocused bloggers

The Productive Blogger & Their Workspace

When you’re running a business (and blogging for income certainly is a business) it’s important to keep everything that you need nearby and to not get overwhelmed with a lot of excess information that’s only going to burden you. It’s best to stick to the bare minimum – even if it’s only to give you plenty of personal space so that you don’t feel flustered. When you’re trying to do something and it’s not going the way that you planned, any unnecessary clutter is going to cause you to get even more frustrated. It may seem trivial, but really, a quick clear out of your work-space gives you a fresher and more prepared for taking on those tasks.

Tips For Clearing Your Work-space:

• Keep everything to the bare minimum

• Don’t clutter up your desk with lots of papers and notes

• Keep a notice board and calendar where you can write your daily goals and see what you need to do at a glance.

• Keep a bin nearby and don’t store things that aren’t useful

Whatever you use as your work-space, it’s important to respect it and, in many ways, it helps your productivity because it gives you a great platform from which to work from and from which to create ideas. Your work-space really is the place from which you’re running your whole business and it’s important to treat it that way.

Are You A Productive Blogger?

One of the common pitfalls that many bloggers make is to not stick to a manageable schedule. Many people make pseudo plans to write a blog post on one day and then put it back to another day because they didn’t feel like it or they were doing something else. One of the best ways to deal with that lack of focus and direction is to just lay out a blogging schedule so that you can always stay on track.

Often, when working online, one of the biggest problems is giving yourself a sense of direction and giving yourself boundaries. In many employed jobs, you’d have a boss to give you some sort of infrastructure, tasks and guidelines for you to follow. When you are your own boss, it becomes your job to give yourself some structure in your work day and a great way of doing that is to set a rigid schedule.

Create a Schedule

Setting a schedule isn’t as daunting as you may think. Many people look at schedules in a negative way and hate to give themselves deadlines to get things done. However, in reality, it’s important to set goals and intentions so that we can follow them and give a sense of direction and purpose to what we’re doing.

When blogging, it’s so easy to call yourself a blogger because you write a blog – however, in any major publishing company or major online website (those that are making lots of money, anyway) they tend to have a regular structure that they stick to because it helps you to keep writers focused and also keeps the momentum of the blogs going. Often, many people give up on a blog after a month or two so it’s incredibly important to know what it is you’re hoping to achieve and when you’re going to achieve it.

What's The Big Deal About Page Views Anyway?

If you’re not new to this blog, you may know that I’m a former sales guru. Ok, maybe not a guru but I did spend 15 years of my younger adult life working in the corporate media sales world. What you might not know is, prior to those 15 years I spent 2 years working in every customer facing sales role available, practicing my craft and fine tuning my gift of selling, only to realise later that I was no good at face to face selling, I was better at phone consultations, simple verdict I was just more comfortable and could let me personality shine without worrying about being judged or ‘hit on’ by male customers….which happened on a few occasions. Anyway i digress, the point is I spent many years focusing on the best way to sell products and then online, plus print advertising space to decision makers within the advertising world. I worked on campaigns with big brands including, British airways, Virgin Atlantic, Ancestry, Home Away, Vue Cinemas, but to name a few.

The work was tiresome & constant, you had to be tenacious and quick thinking, treating every new call and interaction as if it was the first, but also build and maintain a rapport with clients over-time without over stepping boundaries of professionalism……can anyone say arghhhhh!

But, regardless of the gruelling schedule and not to mention the constant anxiety of meeting deadlines and achieving high targets of £10k+ per month, I learned several vital lessons. A couple of which I am going to share with you here.

The Unspoken Link Between Selling & Blogging

First things first, you may be wondering why I am even mentioning sales when this post is supposed to be about page views….let me be clear the two go hand in hand, or at least the principle does although the activity may be different and you might be thinking you didn’t start a blog to sell anything, in fact you probably hate the concept of selling and don’t want any part of this. I hate to break it to you, but every single time you verbally or otherwise recommend a product or service to friends, family or otherwise; you are in fact selling, the only difference, sales people or consultants (as i became) do so for a living and earn a kick-back or commission every time they recommend something and you purchase.

If you plan on earning a living from your blog, you will likely be recommending (selling) products. The nice part about this method is, 9 times out of 10 bloggers have actually used the products they are recommending, making each and every recommendation more genuine and ultimately valuable to your readers, as they basing their decision on your experience and honest feedback.

Great you made it this far!

Here’s the truth I didn’t make 22,000 page views in under 6 weeks, it was in fact 22,405, however that’s a bit of a mouth full so i decided to round down. How did i do it, well before I mention that, lets discover why page views are one of the topics you will constantly read about along your blogging journey.

Like sales (yes, i’m still on that subject, bare with me) in my sales career there’s one thing that every sales person knows, ‘it’s a numbers game’. This statement is a fact and if believed wholeheartedly it is inevitable for anyone, novice or seasoned expert to succeed in the world of sales. Why? Because within the law of averages, it is proven that for every 100 at least 1 will return. In other words, for every 99 doors that were slammed in your face, the 100th door will likely remain open long enough to create a positive outcome. This same law of averages can be applied to almost anything, in doing so you will likely want to recreate that outcome in your personal and professional life, essentially meaning that giving up when the ‘going gets tough’ is not an option, as you may give up on door 98, only 2 doors to go before success strikes. Wheres the joy in that, not to mention all of that wasted effort.

In the sales world, you work tirelessly alongside something called KPI’s, to this day I still don’t quite remember what it stood for, but I knew one thing; I was meant to achieve or exceed them, period!

You see, KPI’s were mini targets, i.e. how many phone calls you should make per day, how many decision makers you should speak to and how many sales you should make per week, all based on the law of averages. In order to hit my own personal target, I always chose to exceed the KPI’s by doubling the numbers and therefore increasing the likelihood of success.

Did It work? Absolutely! I was named sales consultant of the month, every month and was sought after in my industry, in fact my company used recordings of my sales calls as training for new starters, the only thing they didn’t realise was my KPI efforts was the beginning of my success. You can read more about my thoughts of my sales career in my first self published novel From Little Acorns Grow A Forest HERE

Why Do You Keep Being Told 100,000 Page Views Is The Goal?

As you continue along your blogging journey, you will regularly see articles, suggesting that 100,000 page views is the Holy Grail for any successful blogger. Well, now that you have a better understanding of the law of averages, now I can explain why 100,000 is so important.

It’s a numbers game!

Think of it this way, let’s say you recommend a product or service across 100,000 page views, if for every 1000 page views you achieve a successful match (i.e. you match a reader to their preferred product or service) and that product costs £20, for every 1 sale in a 1000 that’s £2000 in potential passive income. On the flip side, if you match across only 10,000 page views, that gives £200 in potential passive income.

Lets be clear, I am not complaining about the £200, in fact any blogger earning £200 across 10,000 page views is doing a great job and based on the law of averages, if they just double or even triple their efforts, that number will also increase with time.

What I am showing you is that, consistent effort + numbers = success. Its a proven strategy.

MarieTavernier.com Visitor Stats

How I Gained 22,000 Page Views In Less than 6 weeks
This chart might be familiar to you, as these are the stats provided by your hosting company, or at least this is what you’ll see when you begin your blogging journey. The chart shows an overview of all my visitor stats from the moment I created this website until present day. You may be wondering why the dates in the left column go all the way back to 2016, well, this is when I created this website, I began creating a solely coaching focused website, without any blog posts, just information on the coaching services I provided etc.

The 6th column along is the page views and if you look down to August 2017, I was doing quite well; this is around the time I began promoting my vision board workshops across social media, but because of my lack of promotional knowledge I didn’t know what else I could do to promote them and I didn’t have the funds for ads, so you will see that my page views took a nosedive in Sept 2017, a slight increase for 2 months (I wasn’t `prepared to give up on promotions, so paid for Facebook ads) then another nose dive for several months whilst I reevaluated my business.

Then comes May 2018, the 18th may to be precise, when I made the ultimate decision to explore the world of blogging. My page views increased from 5k to 11k and then 22,405. In addition, the third column along also shows how many visits per day, which coincides with my blogging efforts and marketing.

So how did I do it?

How did I grow my page views to 22,405 in less than 6 weeks, with only 8 published blog posts and a less than gigantic follower count on social media. It comes down to two things:

1. Social Media

2. Tailwind

Ok, so lets explore them individually

Social Media has been at the forefront of my online strategy for quite some time

This process is simple, build an online presence within the niche your blog is focused on. For me it is personal devlopment and entrepreneurship for single mothers. By utilising the free platforms of Instagram, Facebook pages and groups, Linkedin, Twitter, Snapchat (one i haven’t explored yet) Google+, Tumblr and Pinterest. You have now given yourself and your blog, the opportunity to be seen by billions of potential readers for free.

By staying connected with regular posts and updates as well as engaging with followers via comments and promotions, you will likely see a surge in your blog traffic by simply sharing your latest blog post. Free blog traffic and no advertising.

2. Tailwind is responsible for one thing only, scheduled posting to Pinterest. It is essentially the gateway to pinterest growth. Any blogger who desires to grow their blog traffic rapidly, will want to explore the pinterest search engine. Yes, i said search engine, because that’s what it is; if you thought (like i did) that pinterest was similar to instagram, where people share pictures and recipes etc, you may be on to something, but what you dont know is that pinterest is a search engine with billions of hits each days from across the globe, people who are interested in the topics you blog about, are using keywords to find your content, the problem is your content is nowhere to be found, so they click on someone else’s, explore their work and then click-thru to their blogs….this could be you.

Tailwind makes the process of engaging with your potential readers easier, by allowing you to schedule your pins ahead of time, within time slots they have suggested with analytics they’ve researched for your chosen niche, further optimising the likelihood of people finding your pins. The point is Tailwind allows you to create multiple pins (like the one above) and once scheduled, you can get on with your day, spend time with the kids, blog, work and sleep, knowing that constant traffic is being generated to your blog for only 1/2hrs worth of work. Tailwind is a godsend and the two combined is how I have managed to generate 22,405 page views in less than 6 weeks.

Recommendation Alert:

If you truly want to know exactly how to grow your Pinterest traffic, which will inevitably grow your blog traffic simultaneously. Not to mention the fact that people are making an income with from Pinterest without blogging….yes it’s true and i’m working on this income stream as we speak. If you truly desire to master the #1 blog traffic platform, you need to read the She Approach by Ana, who is a master blogger and Pinterest expert.

I have teamed up with her to offer you (my readers) a copy of her Pinterest Growth Ebook. I have read the book, I was lucky enough to be given an advanced copy so that I could make a genuine recommendation, it truly is worth every penny and thanks to her I discovered the wonders of Tailwind, plus a bucket load of other vital tips and strategies that have grown my monthly Pinterest views to over 1.8k in 6 weeks. 12 Days To Start A Successful Blog – Day 4: Design

Day 4: Blog Design

So you’ve got your blog up and running. All of your settings are entered and you’re ready to get on your way.

The next stage is getting a template for your blog and getting the look and feel just right so that it complements the tone of your blog and compliments what you have to say about your topic.

Blogging
>

There are a whole host of free themes available on the internet for all types of blogs. You can chose a theme based in the administration areas of your blogging software or you can look further afield by typing the name of your blogging software into Google and adding the word ‘templates’ or ‘themes’. For example, you would run a Google search for ‘Wordpress theme’.

Pin Me
Take some time finding a template that looks suitable for what you want your blog to be about. You can even Google, for example, ‘Football WordPress Themes’ if you want to create a blog about football and want to narrow down your search.

Don’t worry if you like a template but there are a few things that you would like to change about it. Many themes come with different color alternatives and you can also change more specific aspects of the template through the control panel or ‘dashboard’ of your blog.

The template that you chose will be important. This is because, when people visit your blog, the first thing that they do is take in a view of the page. If your blog doesn’t look professional enough or friendly enough they may just leave and not read the content that you have to offer.

Try to find a theme or template that reflects the ‘feel’ of your blog. For example, if you want to write a blog about cute little kittens, having a metallic finish to your template will trigger indications of an electronic or technical nature in your visitor’s mind and they are likely to leave. My blog targets women, specifically mums who want to build a business online and benefit from learning how to stay motivated and healthy via personal development. With this in mind I have designed my blog with light colours, that are welcoming but also appeal to my demographic and gender target, but at the same time my design is also neutral for the men who will also benefit.

Target Audience & Your Theme

Pin Me
If your target audience is teenage boys and they’ve clicked on to your blog about the latest and greatest video games, if they see that you have a pink theme with animals all over it, they are not likely to stay and read your content. When visitors click to visit a site, give them what they expect to find or they’ll just leave.
Make sure that you use a simple legible font on your blog. This is to ensure that it can be read by all of your visitors easily. Some more complicated fonts can be too off-putting and will, again, force your visitor to leave. Keep it simple because simple is always best.

3 - The Theme I Chose

I am so grateful for this theme, it has opened up my blog to more possibilities than I ever thought possible. In the summer of 2017, I struggling to find a way to create my site in the way I knew it could be, I started looking around at other websites, and was compelled to work on my own. The look, the design, everything, but it was as easy as just making a decision to change the look, I needed to know how, with what, how much was it going to cost, do I have to hire a web designer? All of this and more was going through my mind, it kept me up and night because i was so determined and after studying, with less than two years to go before having to return to work, I didn’t want to wait. So i began researching, hired a designer and was just about to make the first payment, when this themes marketing popped up on my screen, intrigued; of course! I did more research, immediately cancelled my web designer and began downloading this incredible theme.

I chose the premium version, for me it was a no-brainer. I was just about to pay £350 for a basic web design and here comes Generate Press with it’s premium version for $39.95, inclusive of a years worth of updates, able to use on unlimited websites, it also gives full access to their library and trusted by over 30,000 successful bloggers – which was all I needed to know.

But there’s one other thing that Generate Press does that I cannot and will not live without….

Generate Press is fully compatible with most of the available drag and drop builders and the one that was highly recommended to me was Elementor.

Elementor is a true God send, without it I truly believe that this blog would be a Hot Mess!

As I mentioned before my budget was a crucial Factor in my decision making process as you are just starting out in the world off blogging chances are you do not have a lot of money to spend on fancy £100 per hour web designers either. Elementor is the perfect solution for you and the other 1,000,000 users to date.

Elementor saves you time

One of the main features that attracted me too elemental was the time saving aspect.
I had been busy researching other blogs and had seen great designs and layouts with colourful backgrounds and scrolling images I didn’t think it was crazy to think I could achieve the same , but once again my budget was a factor.
The Elementor templates, made building my site a joy. All of the beautiful and appealing functions in one template, you just have to access the Elementor library, pick a template and select insert.

Your new blog post will be uploaded with the full design, you then just play around with the settings, swap out or add features and images, replace placeholder text with your own, change the colours to match your brand and BINGO, you have a professionally designed post in under a couple of hours or less.

Design Tip: Use An A4 Jotter Pad

I like to use an A4 jotter pad , to outline the design of my post; that way I’m not overwhelmed with the design tweaks and then the overwhelming task of including appealing text to attract my readers attention. Sometimes as a blogger, we can tend to overthink this step. However all it takes is some well thought out notes, just remember, they are just notes and a rough outline – remember to K.I.S.S each post (keep it simple silly) and you’ll have great content in no time.

Elementor: Featured Widgets

The feature widgets include some of my all time favourites for creating great blog posts, that both professional and engaging:

Some of the widgets included are video i.e. you can simply link your own or someone elses youtube video directly into your blog post, all you’ll need is the youtube url. Text – is of course self explanatory as well as images. Social media share buttons are crucial to grow your following and traffic stats and my all time favourite, forms* and html which can be used to include affiliate banners and widgets (discussed in later post).

Here is a snapshot:

Elementor Widgets
Pin Me

Elementor can be downloaded in wordpress now and many of it’s features are included for Free. I had the initial version and upgradrd after only 30 days to the Pro* version for just $49 for 12 months with a 50% discount on renewal – Brilliant!

The main reason I upgraded is as I mentioned earler, I wanted my blog to look and function as other more experienced bloggers as created and the only way to do that was to invest in the pro package. Features like forms are essential to growing your email list and is only available in the pro version of Elementor. Whats even greater about this feature is it allows you to seamlessly integrate your mailchimp or other email platfrom directly into the widget settings with your unique API key. You do not have to leave the design interface to update your plugin, everything is readily available in one screen, genius!

Elementor has made my blogging experience a breeze, I’m glad i came across it (by pure chance) I wouldn’t change a thing about it and I’m confident you’ll feel the same.

When starting out in the world of blogging, you have to consider your brand. What is it that you want people to associate your blog with and how does that translate into your blog.

Your blog sets you apart from the others, it’s written in your voice and offers many the opportunity to experience your unique personality, whilst still experiencing the incredible information you share.

Brand Name/Url - Your Niche

Over the course of trying to figure out what/who and why I was creating a blog, I tossed around several names, most of which meant nothing to me; but in an attempt to attract and impress my potential audience I was prepared to settle for any name that would draw the crowd. In many cases, new bloggers will do exactly the same thing in attempt for instant gratification and success, we all tend to forget that we have a target audience (we just don’t know what it is yet) and our blog should reflect that audience; once we figure out who they are.

Sound simple enough?

Of course not, if it did you wouldn’t be here.

So let me break it down further!

I was lucky, I already knew who I wanted to target. My blogging journey started with a hair blog for African/Caribbean women and children across the UK. I wrote about my hair growth and changes, I wrote about hair-care in the UK climate, homemade products and oils to moisturise hair, products to avoid, reviews and hairstyles, among other things. Sounds good huh, i mean in a 38 billion pound industry, it was only fair that my love of hair and sharing, would benefit from at least 3% of that market, correct? Wrong!

There was a Problem: i didn’t know who my target audience was, what did they do, what was there family life and social life and did they make enough money to purchase the items I was suggesting? Furthermore, i didn’t know how to get to them once I found them!

Your Niche and Blog Name

Get Clear! that’s my #1 advice.

How do you do that?

#1. Write down on a piece of paper the topic (s) you want to blog about and jot down a few name ideas

#2. Ask yourself who you want to target sometimes the easiest people to target, are people just like you – who are you?

My other advice is this: Do What Nike Says Sometimes ‘Just Do It’ works the best!
If you really dislike your blog name and niche after a few months, no one is stopping you from choosing a different name and niche and starting again - I did. This is the benefit of being a beginning blogger, you have the ability to change and pivot as much as you wish because your audience is still small. So I highly encourage you to dive in, test things out, and go with it!
You will learn so much more from actually doing it, than by waiting to take perfect action. Everything in the beginning as a blogger is an adventure. It’s fun! Don’t stress out about the little things. The more you test and try, the quicker you will reach success.
