Womens Health - Balancing Hormones

I noticed a complete change in my cycle, typically mid-cycle spotting. Honestly it scared the ‘be-jesus’ out of me, I started googling and we all know what that leads to, an obsession with the possibility of the big C. Hell No! I’m a single mum, who’s gonna take care of my kids if i’m gone….Then as I started to try to match my symptoms online i.e. noticeable levels of PMS tiredness, fatigue, light-headedness, and spotting 5 days after completing my period, I realised there was an exact pattern and the only logical explanation was a hormonal imbalance*

Balancing Hormones
PIN ME
When it comes to balancing out your hormones, sometimes that can feel like a huge challenge because there are stressors in life that are pretty hard to deal with. Balancing your hormones naturally can actually be quite exciting, though a lot of people do not know where to begin in this process. How can a person balance out their hormones within the natural state? Does stress play a factor in all of this or is it merely just nature and the way of the beast? Some people will beg to differ, of course, that’s just the way human nature is. What may work for you is the complete opposite of how someone else may go about something in life. That’s just life and to each their own, correct? What is a hormone in the body to even begin with? Well, keep in mind that a hormone is just another chemical and or substance in the body that works as a vessel in people’s bodies that will make them act or do a certain thing, whether that element is good or bad.
Women go through a lot of different hormone changes when they are menstruating or expecting a child. Their hormone levels will tend to go up in high extremities because of all the new chemicals being introduced inside the body at one time. Men will also go through hormone changes in their lives as well, so men, don’t think that you’ll get off that easy when it comes to hormone changes. Men will tend to go through what you’ll probably know of as “having a midlife crisis,” and this occurs around a man’s forties. Their testosterone levels drop, a lot of the times making them act spontaneously and out of character and it all has to do with that hormone change. Did you know that hormones in both men and women’s bodies will control our whole lives? It controls how we think, how we definitely act and even how we smell. Hormones are the next closest component to our brains that control what we do, say, and how we act. Today, we are going to be taking a look at how to balance your hormones in the natural state.

Getting Enough Sleep Throughout the Night

Balancing Hormones

Getting enough sleep throughout the night is so vital when it comes to balancing out your hormones at any age. When you don’t get enough sleep throughout the night no matter what age you are, that behavioral pattern can have major effects on your body, mind, and spirit. It is recommended that an adult get at least eight hours of noninterrupted sleep each night, which is quite difficult; absolutely. Keep in mind that when you don’t get enough sleep, your body as in your mind cannot function in the appropriate formats to win each day at life. Your mind may tend to feel a bit foggy; as if you are in some type of daze and not to mention the mood swings.

Getting enough sleep throughout the night plays a huge role in balancing your hormones on the daily basis because when you are not leveled out, your mind and body cannot function at the level of certainty needed to support a healthier you. If you are one to have trouble sleeping throughout the night, it would be best to take some herbal supplements or drink some Sleepy Time Tea right before you go onto bed, that way your system will feel as though it’s naturally shutting down for a great night’s sleep. My preferred beverage is chamomile tea and if you prefer you can always add some lemon or a teaspoon of honey as a natural sweetener. The brand I prefer is Pukka organic, the teabags are infused with vanilla and Manuka honey. I love love the taste, so soothing and does the job. Pukka Organic Chamomile tea

It’s always better to try your best to get eight hours of sleep in each night, so you will be able to function with high speed throughout the next day, taking care of yourself, as well your family. Imagine if you only obtained two hours of sleep per night. How on Earth do you think that would make your body and mind feel, and nonetheless, how do you think your hormones would think you? That’s right; they wouldn’t! Your hormones would be all over the place in your body, making you feel tired, grouchy, and just like your truly not balanced out and really, you wouldn’t be. I quickly discovered how important a good nights sleep is, since having kids I thought sleep was a luxury; but I quickly discovered that my interrupted sleep was due to bad air conditions in my property, I combat this with a Levoit HEPA air filter, it sucks out impurities in the air, its quiet, smells nice and has improved mine and my kids sleep 100%. You can try one HERE the Levoit HEPA air purifier

Eating the Proper Diet

Balancing Hormones
Eating a proper diet is an amazing thing to do when it comes to balancing out your hormones. Most people wouldn’t think that eating a specific diet would help in balancing out a person’s hormones, but it truly can. If you eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, you will be able to notice a huge difference in how you comprehend things in life, how much lighter your overall body feels, and even the mind. Your mind will feel so much better if you feed it with the appropriate foods and drinks. Let me give you a small example right fast, okay? Say, you eat out a lot at fast food places, which we all know is super bad for your physical and mental health. All right, so let’s say you do that every day while you are on your way to and from work and then when you get home, you open yourself a boxed dinner and eat it.
Now, what do you think that is going to do to your overall system, both mentally and physically? Not only are you going to gain a lot of weight, but you are going to feel so bogged down in your mind and spirit, that you will not even be able to solve the next life task right in front of you. Now, what I mean by saying that is your motivation levels will tend to go down because you are eating and drinking foods that clog your memory and make you want to just lay around all day long. It’s truly an awful thing to do to your body, and it’s actually a format of self-harm because you know what eating badly will do to your mind and body, yet you go on and do it anyway because it convenient and easy, but just think how hard your liver is trying to work to digest all of that salt and sugar.

As a side note, just think how your hormones are trying to keep up with the change going on in your body. Keep in mind that we are nothing more than a reflection of what’s been reflected upon us and that goes for our hormones, too. What we put into our bodies, our mind and hormones are going to reflect that component, and when we are putting bad foods and drinks into our bodies, the hormones in our bodies can do nothing but act bad and unstable because that’s what we are replenishing into our bodies. Do you see what we are getting at here? It can be a vicious circle, and it’s best if we all don’t get caught up in that.

Trust me I should know, I’ve been battling with my weight for years and this recent health-scare prompted me to change my diet, so I cut out meat and poultry (for a Caribbean woman that’s tough) but its been surprisingly easy as I love seafood, the other two components are 1. limiting my complex carbs intake and 2. drinking 4 cups of organic Oolong tea, which is known for its herbal properties, one being a natural fat burner and the other to balance hormones.

The tea alone is responsible for burning 3 inches of body fat off my body in just 3 weeks (I measure myself regularly) as well as regulating my PMS symptoms making the whole process seamless. You can get a box of the Oolong tea here and see the results for yourself Prince of Peace organic Oolong Tea

Learning to Meditate

Balancing Hormones

Last but not least….meditation

I’m a true advocate for meditation, in fact I have it as my main image on my vision board, its responsible for calmness in the most testing of times, but is also a great tool for manifesting in real time. I typically meditate in the morning before my shower, you can dedicate as little as 10mins to meditation and it effectively sets the intention for my day. How does this fit into the theme of balancing hormones?

A lot of people nowadays meditate because they want to relieve stressors in their lives, become more flexible and even to get out of the house and meet people! Joining a local Yoga class is an amazing thing to do if you want to balance out your hormones naturally because meditation expands the mind, as well the body to greater brain patterns and behavioral patterns for daily life. The hormones in our bodies control how we think, how we act, and literally everything we do in our lives. Why not try and regulate them so you can feel and perform better in life? It would only make sense that a person would want to feel better, correct? First starting out, it can be hard to focus and meditate but the key factor is to start out small and work your way up and out of your bad mood, your feeling of worthless, and that feeling of not having vibrant life inside of your core. What would be recommended would be to join a Yoga class, where they meet at least once or twice per week.

Typically I tend to lean towards the delight of Hot Yoga and have enjoyed many sessions of Bikram Yoga, although different from the normal conditions the western world have embraced, Bikram yoga will leave you feeling like a new woman inside and out; with its many notable benefits i.e. improved circulation, brain function and heart health, as well as improved posture and coordination; but to name a few. There are many local Hot Yoga centres both nationally and internationally, having tried a couple my preferred centre is located close to home in Middlesex.

Sidenote: Just be conscious of how you manage your week, you cannot live an unhealthy life for five or six days out of the week and go into yoga class for one or two days out of your week, do some simple Yoga and expect your hormones to balance out naturally. It’s an everyday thing that you are going to have to work at.

Intermittent Fasting & Biblical Times

The topic of intermittent fasting is rather intriguing because it is actually mentioned in the Bible a fair amount of times. People of Biblical times fasted in times of depending on God, in times of prayer and when serious decisions were called for. Today’s people also fast because they simply want to lose weight; some do it for medical reasons too. Intermittent fasting is quite a broad term that basically means that from time to time you don’t eat, usually lasting longer than the normal overnight fast.

Even though fasting goes back thousands of years, and practiced by humans through the ages, it is not so widely practiced today; what with all the new health fads around. But its methods and ways have stood the test of time and achieved amazing benefits – not only weight loss but more energy, diabetes reversal and much more. And it doesn’t require any time and certainly no money. It’s just a natural part of life.

People ask, “But, isn’t it that you’re starving yourself?” No, not at all! Fasting is different. Starvation is when you are involuntarily deprived of food for an ongoing time period whereas, with fasting, you voluntary decide not to take in food, be it for health or for spiritual reasons. You are choosing not to eat when you fast and it can last for hours, for days, for weeks – it is at your will. In fact, any time you don’t eat, you are actually fasting. That is where the word “breakfast” comes from – to break your fast, which you do on a daily basis. It’s really just a part of our everyday lives, but today, we have forgotten what a powerful and therapeutic tool intermittent fasting is all about.

How Does Intermittent Fasting Actually Work

At the very foundation, fasting is about your body burning off excess body fat. If you have body fat, you have food energy that is in storage and when you don’t eat, your body starts to ‘eat’ at the fat to get the energy it needs. Because our lives are all about balance, the same applies to our bodies – eating and fasting keep the balance.

We humans, when eating, sometimes ingest more food than can immediately be used for energy. Sometimes that energy gets stored as fat, to be used later. The key hormone in our body for the storage of food energy is insulin. As you eat food and increase the insulin levels in your body, so you store sugar which is converted to fat. This fat is often stored in your liver but can also be sent to other fat-depositing places of your body. We have two storage systems in the body for energy – glycogen and body fat. When you don’t eat, the above process goes into reverse, so instead of insulin levels rising, they now fall, telling the body to start burning up the stored energy as no food is coming its way.

Our bodies are constantly in two states, the fed state, and the fasted state – either storing food for energy or burning it. If each of us were to start eating food the minute we got out of bed in the morning, continuing to eat until we went to bed again at night, our bodies would spend all the time in that fed state. We would gain weight, not having allowed our bodies to burn any of that food into energy. To restore some balance and to lose weight, we need to spend that time exercising or fasting because these allow the body to use up that stored energy. Our bodies were designed to work like that. Look at dogs, cats, wild animals; that is what they do. If we constantly eat as sometimes it is recommended, our bodies aren’t going to get around to burning the body fat, instead; it will just store it.

The Fast Diet Changed My Life

Are there benefits to intermittent fasting?

intermittent fasting weight loss for the single mother
There are loads of benefits…The first one is weight loss, but apart from that, there are plenty of other reasons:

 Intermittent fasting cleanses and detoxifies the body

 The body is rejuvenated as it gets rid of toxins

 Improved concentration and mental clarity

 A reduction in blood sugar and insulin levels

 You can reverse Diabetes 2

 More energy

 Increases growth hormones

 Lowers cholesterol

 Has the ability to lower the risk of Alzheimer’s

 You have the potential to live longer

 Fasting stimulates autophagy

 Inflammation is reduced.

Diets can complicate your life, but fasting can simplify it. When you start a diet, you need to go out and buy all the ‘right’ ingredients, but fasting is free. Dieting can take time, but fasting saves you time. Diets offer you a limited type of eating whereas fasting can be done anywhere, any time.

There are short fasts that last up to about 24 hours and then there are the longer fasts that last well over 24 hours. Those who go on the shorter fasts do them more frequently than if they went on a long fast.

The 8 Hour Eating Window

 The 8-hour eating window fast

This is where you eat all your meals within 8 hours. The remaining 16 hours of the day you fast. This is usually done on a daily basis. It is basically eating all of the meals in 8 hours and leaving the other hours free, to fast.

 The 20:4 hour fast
This is where you eat your meals within a 4 hour period, leaving the other 20 hours to fast.

 The 24 hour fast
This involves fasting from lunch on one day to lunch to the next day, or from supper to supper. If for instance, you eat your lunch today, you skip your dinner and also your breakfast the next day, eating only again at lunchtime. When you eat only once in a day, it equates to eating around 3 times a week.

 The 5:2 day fast
On this diet, you eat regularly for 5 days in a row, and then you fast for 2 days. On the 2 fasting days, you are ‘allowed’ to eat up to 500 calories on each of the days, any time and spread out or eaten in one meal. This fasting method was made popular by Dr. Mosley in his book called ‘The Fast Diet’.

 The 36 hour fast
Look at it this way – you eat your dinner on the first day, on your second day you fast and on the third day, you eat breakfast. That makes 36 hours of fasting.

Longer fasting periods like the 48 hour fast

This type of fasting lasts longer than 48 hours. When you go on the more extended fasts, it is recommended that you take a multivitamin so that you don’t go without certain nutrients and develop deficiencies.

Should You Exercise Whilst Fasting?

PIN ME
It is a good idea to continue exercising like you usually do while you fast. Food is not necessary to provide sufficient energy for doing exercises. You will be burning fat more than ever for the energy needed.

When you fast, your human growth hormones will go up and the insulin levels will go down. Fat burning hormones increase, actually increasing metabolic rates by around 3.6-14%. There is a study that shows that intermittent fasting actually causes less muscle loss than some standard methods of dieting or calorie restriction. Keep in mind though that the main reason intermittent fasting works is that you do take in overall fewer calories. This means that if you eat more or binge in your eating periods, you are not likely to lose weight at all!

The Paleo Diet: How To Lose Weight Fast The Healthier Way

Subscribe to our newsletter

Lose Weight Fast The Paleo Way

So you want to lose weight, but you do’t know how. No need to threat, the answer is in the Paleo Method of eating and living. Becoming healthy has been a lifelong struggle for many of us and now with busy lifestyles, kids a family and a business to manage, you may be wondering how it can be possible?! The answer has been in your fridge all along.

Diet/Fitness
>

The Paleo Diet buzz started years back and it took the world by storm – it managed to change the way people looked at eating and dieting.

Becoming healthy can be a struggle and it can also be costly and that’s why people look for quick and easy ways to get healthy.

The Paleo diet appealed and still appeals to millions of people because basically, it’s not really a diet, it’s a lifestyle of eating the way the first people on earth used to eat – the way nature intended.

I have tried numerous diets and been successful at all of them, only to find that i’ve put the weight back on within months or sometimes weeks of ending the regime. But that’s the missing ingredient that many of us forget or take for granted, eating healthy is not a diet with an end point, it is in fact a way of life. Too many diets have dates, and weaning of processes, I don’t want to be weaned of anything that is supposed to be good for me! The trick is to find a way to live and eat that you can sustain for the rest of your life, something practical that does not involve constant weighing and definately does not have you feeling like a failure every time you put a chocolate bar in your mouth. The answer is the Paleo Diet or Lifestyle as I prefer.

I am 8 months into my Paleo lifestyle and chose to do it with Fish as my only source of animal protein, in other words I’m a Pescatarian. Alongside some intense workouts and strength training I feel great, sleep better and see results in my body, with or without the exercise.

Side Note: This diet methodology may be familiar to you as it will resemble the work of popular best selling author and creator Dr Atkins. His work and findings were found popular with millions across the world and I was personally successful on this plan several times. The Atkins Diet is not the original plan, as it has been marketed recently. The main difference between Atkins and Paleo is the restrictive nature of Atkins and high concentration of protein over healthy carbs and leafy greens. To compare the two access both HERE Paleo and HERE Atkins

PIN ME

Paleo: Who started it and what is it briefly?

The Paleo Diet includes meats, berries, and nuts – eating what our ancestors did in the Paleolithic era and what they found in nature. When agriculture started, and foods started becoming processed and ‘unhealthy’, that’s when all our health problems started.

The Paleo Diet basically says to stay away from all the unnatural modern foods of today, in their processed and refined preparations. That’s why the diet is called ‘Paleo’ because it means ‘old’ or ‘ancient’ – going back to those ancient ways of eating. People living in ancient times were healthy, eating only what nature provided and what they could eat from their hunting. Years later, people wanted to improve on these ancient ways and that’s when agriculture started to evolve. The more civilized people became, the more they wanted to find quick and easy solutions for everything. They started producing food that was much easy to prepare and cook and which become instantly available to them on the markets, kind of becoming ‘lazier’ – meantime, this is when all the health problems and all the eating disorders started to begin and to multiply rapidly.

Once people realized they were becoming sick and deconditioned, they were eager to find ways to be healthy again and that is where the Paleo diet came into being.

Getting down to basics

PIN ME
The basics of the Paleo diet are simple; eat plenty of fish, meat, eggs, fruits, nuts, vegetables, spices, herbs, healthy oils, and fats. You need to avoid all the processed and ‘fake’ foodstuffs such as soft drinks, sugar, grains, and a lot of dairy products, artificial sweeteners, legumes, vegetable oil, trans-fats and margarine. In case you are not sure, trans-fats are types of fat found in many foods and are considered bad because they increase cholesterol levels in the blood. They decrease the good levels of cholesterol in your blood too.

That means if you are eager to follow the Paleo Diet, you will have to say goodbye to the cereals, the pasta and the sweets and chocolates. Think about your caveman ancestors – none of these foods were around in their day and they were the healthier for it. If you are eating the caveman type of diet, you don’t really need to count calories either because removing sugar, processed and refined foods from your diets makes you healthy and lean in any case – the caveman never had unnatural sugars and fatty hamburgers and refined and processed foods to contend with back in the day – he didn’t have to count calories!

How often must I eat on the Paleo Diet?

Intermittent Fasting Successful Weight Loss For Single Mothers
PIN ME

The best way to follow the Paleo diet is to eat when you’re hungry and don’t eat when you are not hungry. Think about those cavemen, they didn’t have the luxury of popping over to vending machines to drink or eat at leisure when the whim overtook them. They might have gone hours, even a couple of days without finding good food and it’s in these situations where our bodies were designed to take care of that – the excess fat stores are used as energy in these types of occasions.

Start on your Paleo diet lifestyle today – it’s worth a try, and especially when you think how it helps even with health issues such as:

• Reducing belly fat

• Reducing blood sugar and increasing insulin sensitivity

• Reducing risk of heart disease

• Reducing inflammation

All of the above benefits can be increased when combining them with the Fast Diet benefits of Intermittent Fasting, this is the way I have been eating for nearly 12 months now and the benefits are huge, especially to the ultimate problem area; the stomach (a woman’s nightmare, especially after children).

Hungry to get started? Hippocrates was right when he said, “Let food be thy medicine, thy medicine shall be thy food” and the Paleo Diet can do just that for you.
